Thorpe Park, Amusement park in Thorpe, Surrey
Thorpe Park is an amusement park in Runnymede, Surrey, covering roughly 162 hectares with more than 30 attractions. The site includes several themed zones hosting roller coasters and water rides, many of which run over or beside man-made lakes.
The site served as a gravel quarry from the 1930s until it opened as a water leisure center in 1979. Over the following decades, roller coasters and themed rides gradually replaced the original water sports focus.
The name comes from the old Thorpe Park Estate that once stood on this land before gravel extraction began. Much of the current layout includes artificial lakes formed from the original pits, creating water scenery that visitors see around many of the attractions.
Reserve entry tickets through the website beforehand to skip long queues at the gate. Regular shuttle buses run from London Waterloo station if you prefer not to drive.
Hyperia reaches a height of approximately 72 meters (236 feet) and became the tallest roller coaster in the United Kingdom when it opened in 2023. The ride features an outward banked hill that gives riders a feeling of weightlessness, a design element found nowhere else on Earth.
