Nemesis Inferno, Steel roller coaster in Thorpe Park, United Kingdom
Nemesis Inferno is a steel roller coaster at Thorpe Park in Surrey, running along 750 meters of track with four inversions including a vertical loop and twin corkscrews. The layout weaves through artificial rock formations and simulated volcanic caverns, with sections of track elevated above ground and others suspended below the support structure.
The ride opened in April 2003 after initial concepts by John Wardley and technical design by Werner Stengel. Swiss manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard built the installation as an inverted coaster, where riders sit beneath the rail rather than above it.
In 2004, the roller coaster entered record attempts when 81 participants joined for the Most Naked People on a Rollercoaster challenge point.
Two trains with seven cars each carry up to 56 people at a time, with each ride lasting roughly two minutes. Visitors must be at least 1.4 meters tall to board, and loose items such as bags or clothing should be secured beforehand.
During the ride, the train passes through a simulated volcanic vent with fire effects and mist that create the impression of an active eruption. The track skims close to water surfaces at several points, giving riders the sensation of nearly touching the ground below.
