Lunt Roman Fort

Lunt Roman Fort is a reconstructed military garrison in Baginton featuring wooden gates, earthen ramparts, and barracks based on archaeological research. The site also includes a museum housed in a grain storage building that displays Roman weapons, equipment, and details about soldier life.

The fort was established around 60 AD in response to the Iceni rebellion, serving as a supply base for Roman legions during their military campaign against Queen Boudica. It played a key role in the early stages of Roman occupation and control of the region.

The site reflects the daily routines of Roman soldiers who lived and worked at this outpost, with reconstructed buildings showing how military life was organized. Visitors gain insight into the practical concerns of troops stationed far from Rome and their role in controlling the local region.

The fort operates on limited hours primarily during school holidays, so plan your visit by checking opening days beforehand. The site is accessible on foot, though the grounds can become muddy in wet weather.

The fort contains a rare Roman horse training ground called a gyrus, which is a circular arena. This distinctive circular training space is one of the few known examples from anywhere in the Roman world.
