The Rockingham Mausoleum, Grade I listed mausoleum in Wentworth, England
The Rockingham Mausoleum is a Grade I listed monument standing 90 feet (27 meters) tall, built from sandstone in Wentworth. Four corner obelisks frame the structure, which sits within a railed enclosure on Cortworth Lane.
The mausoleum was built in 1785 to honor Charles Watson-Wentworth, the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham. He served as Prime Minister until his death in 1782 and is commemorated through this monument.
Inside, eight busts of Whig politicians line the walls, reflecting the social connections of the Marquess. These portraits offer visitors a glimpse into the political circles of his era.
The monument sits on Cortworth Lane and is accessible for visitors to explore both inside and outside. Check opening hours beforehand to plan your visit properly.
Despite its appearance as a tomb, this is actually a cenotaph that holds no remains inside. The Marquess himself rests in York Minster, over 40 miles away.
