Hopetoun Monument, Category B listed monument in Garleton Hills, East Lothian, Scotland
The Hopetoun Monument is a tall stone tower on Byres Hill that rises about 95 feet above the surrounding landscape. A narrow spiral staircase inside leads to an observation deck at the top, offering views from the summit.
Completed in 1824 and designed by architect William Burn, the monument honors John Hope, the 4th Earl of Hopetoun. Local tenant farmers funded its construction as a tribute to the family's influence in the region.
Locals call this monument the Galla Monument, reflecting the deep ties between the Hopetoun family and the farming communities of East Lothian who supported its creation.
Reach the monument via a path from the car park, which winds uphill through wooded slopes to the summit. Good fitness helps for the climb, especially when weather is wet or muddy underfoot.
On clear days, views from the top stretch all the way to the distant Cairngorms, far beyond the nearer Pentland and Lammermuir Hills. This rare long-distance view is one of the most rewarding reasons to climb the stairs.
