Garleton Castle

Garleton Castle is a ruined fortress in East Lothian built over several periods. The site contains a round stair tower, gunloops for cannon fire, and multiple stone blocks arranged across the landscape.

The castle was founded by the Lindsay family and later came under Seton control. Its defensive features were updated over time as military technology and needs changed.

The structure represents the architectural evolution of Scottish defensive buildings, featuring both military elements and residential spaces including vaulted kitchens.

The ruins sit north of Haddington and are reachable by country roads. The site offers open views across the East Lothian landscape and is accessible year-round.

A converted farm cottage sits within the castle ruins, showing how later inhabitants repurposed the structure. This adaptation of medieval stone for domestic use is an unusual detail most visitors overlook.
