Coldoch Broch, Iron Age broch in Stirling, Scotland

Coldoch Broch is an Iron Age circular stone tower that stands on raised ground near Doune in Stirling. The structure features thick defensive walls with internal chambers and maintains its original east-facing entrance passage.

This Iron Age site was excavated and cleared before 1870, revealing its construction from that ancient period. The tower type once dominated the Scottish landscape as a principal form of fortified settlement.

The broch design demonstrates the advanced building methods of ancient Scottish societies, incorporating defensive features and living spaces within thick stone walls.

The site sits on elevated ground southwest of Doune and is relatively accessible to reach. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear as the terrain is uneven and exposed to the elements.

The tower stands next to what was once an extensive marsh in the Forth Valley, giving its inhabitants strategic control over movements in the lowlands. This elevation would have provided partial protection during seasonal flooding.
