Chorleywood House Estate, Nature reserve in Chorleywood, Hertfordshire, England.
Chorleywood House Estate is a nature reserve covering around 64 hectares with formal parkland, open meadows, mature woodland, and the River Chess running through it. The waterway divides the land into distinct zones with different plant and animal habitats.
The mansion was built in 1822 by John Barnes and remained a private residence for over a century. Local councils acquired the property in 1940 and opened it to the public.
Local families use the grounds regularly for outdoor recreation and gathering. The space draws visitors who enjoy walking, having meals outdoors, and watching wildlife.
The main entrance is on Common Road opposite the Cricket Club, where marked walking paths begin. Picnic areas and seating spots are distributed throughout the grounds for visitor comfort.
The banks of the River Chess host protected plant species including coralroot bittercress, a small herb that thrives in wet conditions. The Dell area functions as a key site for neutral grassland ecology and recovery.
