Rotherhithe crossing, Pedestrian bridge project in Rotherhithe, England
The Rotherhithe crossing is a planned footbridge and cycle route that spans from the south bank at Rotherhithe to the north bank at Canary Wharf. It features a 180-meter lifting span designed to raise approximately 65 meters above water, allowing river traffic to pass safely beneath.
Transport for London launched the project in 2017, finalizing the design for a vertical lift mechanism in 2019. Construction was later suspended due to funding limitations.
The crossing would link two distinct neighborhoods, making it easier for people living on opposite banks to visit and interact with each other. Many local residents see this connection as a way to bring their communities closer together.
The project remains in planning stages and is not yet open to visitors. Once completed, it will function as a straightforward pedestrian and cycling route between the two riverbanks.
If completed, it would be the first entirely new Thames crossing downstream of Tower Bridge in decades. This addition would significantly alter how river infrastructure serves the area.
