Rhode Island School of Design, Design school in Providence, United States.
Rhode Island School of Design is a private art college in Providence spread across several streets on College Hill. Its buildings range from converted industrial structures to modern glass facades and include studios, galleries, and dormitories.
Helen Adelia Rowe Metcalf founded the school in 1877 to give women in New England access to design education. Since 1900, an agreement with Brown University has allowed students to take courses at both institutions.
The campus feels like an artists' quarter woven through the city, where studios and workshops occupy historic buildings. Students carry large portfolios along the streets or work on outdoor projects, giving the neighborhood a creative character.
Buildings are scattered throughout the neighborhood, so visitors should use a map to locate the different sites. The museum and some galleries are open to the public, while other areas remain reserved for students.
The attached museum holds around 100,000 artworks, making it one of the largest college museums in the United States. The collection includes objects from around the world, from ancient Egyptian artifacts to contemporary installations.
