White County, Administrative county in southern Illinois, United States.
White County stretches across 502 square miles of land featuring the Little Wabash River, Big Prairie regions, and agricultural fields near the Illinois-Indiana border.
The county formed from Gallatin County in 1815, receiving its name from Captain Leonard White, who died at the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811.
German families from Baden region settled in the central part of the county during the 1840s, joining earlier Scots-Irish settlers from the Carolinas.
The county seat of Carmi contains government offices, while Interstate 64 and U.S. Highway 45 provide primary transportation routes through the region.
The discovery of oil in 1939 transformed White County from an agricultural area into an oil production center, doubling Carmi's population within two years.
