Brooklyn Museum, Art museum in Brooklyn, United States
The Brooklyn Museum is a large art museum in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, housed in a building with a Beaux-Arts facade. The rooms spread across several floors and include galleries for painting, sculpture, textiles and objects from many cultures and periods.
The institution began in 1823 as an apprentices' training facility and was later joined with the local institute for arts. The current building was completed in the early twentieth century and replaced earlier locations.
The name refers to the borough where the building has stood since the nineteenth century, and the collections display works from every continent. Visitors today can see art from Egypt, West Africa, Oceania and Japan housed together in a single building.
The museum opens Wednesday through Sunday in the afternoon, with Thursday rooms staying open until evening. The entrance is on Eastern Parkway and can be reached by subway or on foot through the adjoining park.
The facade was originally meant to display a grand staircase with columns, but only part was built when funding ran out. The building was entered into a register of protected structures in the 1970s.
