Henry W. Maxwell Memorial, Bronze memorial in Grand Army Plaza, United States
The Henry W. Maxwell Memorial is a bronze tablet with Maxwell's relief mounted on a large natural boulder at Grand Army Plaza. The artwork combines sculptural detail with a respectful memorial format.
The memorial was dedicated in 1903 and created by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. It was moved to its current Grand Army Plaza location in 1912.
The memorial honors Maxwell's contributions to Brooklyn's education system, particularly his support for Long Island College Hospital and the Brooklyn Institute. His work shaped the region's institutional development.
The memorial is located at the intersection of Eastern Parkway and Flatbush Avenue, near the main entrance of Prospect Park. The site is easily walkable and well-integrated into the surrounding area.
The original ornate plaque was removed in the 1970s due to vandalism and is now preserved in the Brooklyn Museum's collection. This conservation measure shows how vulnerable public artworks can be.
