Sarah Lawrence College, Liberal arts college in Yonkers, United States
Sarah Lawrence College is a liberal arts institution in Yonkers just north of New York City, spreading across roughly 44 acres. The campus combines Tudor Revival architecture with modern academic buildings and residential halls for students.
William Van Duzer Lawrence founded the institution in 1926 and named it after his wife Sarah Bates Lawrence as a progressive college for women. The school later opened to all genders and developed a particular focus on individual academic design.
Students shape their own academic programs through close collaboration with professors in small discussion groups that define campus life. This personal approach shows itself in daily interactions through frequent conversations between teachers and learners along pathways and in common spaces.
The college maintains a ratio of 10 students per faculty member and accepts applications through the Common Application until mid-January. Financial support is available to most students, which helps make access to educational programs easier.
The Barbara Walters Campus Center opened in 2019 and offers modern gathering spaces for student activities and social events. The Heimbold Visual Arts Center next door houses studios and exhibition areas that regularly display work by students and visiting artists.
