Franklin, third-class city in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States
Franklin is a city in the southwestern part of Milwaukee County covering about 35 square miles and home to around 36,000 residents. It features sixteen city parks, eleven county-managed parks, and seven school parks totaling about 3,880 acres of green space where visitors can walk, play, and enjoy outdoor sports.
Franklin was established in 1841 and officially became a city in 1956 to protect itself from possible annexation by Milwaukee. During the 1950s, the city experienced rapid growth that transformed the original wooded landscape of hickory, walnut, and butternut trees into a residential area.
The name Franklin honors Benjamin Franklin and reflects the city's connection to American history. The place is shaped by family-friendly values and neighborhood spirit, where residents regularly gather for festivals, outdoor markets, and sports activities.
The city is easy to navigate with good roads and access points for drivers and cyclists. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is located about 4 miles away, and Interstates 94 and U.S. Highway 45 provide quick connections to larger cities and nearby areas.
The Root River flows through the city and was originally marked by abundant wildlife including deer, bears, and wolves that early settlers found in the wooded landscape. Notably, the city transformed from a farming area just 30 years ago into today's suburban community with numerous residential neighborhoods and commercial centers.
