East Fishkill, human settlement in Dutchess County, New York, United States of America

East Fishkill is a town in southern Dutchess County, New York, covering about 57 square miles with mostly flat terrain and gentle hills. The landscape is crossed by streams and rivers, and features scattered residential areas mixed with open land.

East Fishkill was founded in 1849 after separating from the larger Fishkill area, though Dutch settlers had been in the region since the late 1600s. During the American Revolution, the town became significant when leaders like George Washington and Lafayette met at Captain Jacob Griffin's Tavern to plan resistance against British rule.

The name East Fishkill comes from Fishkill Creek, which Dutch settlers called Vis Kille, meaning Fish Creek. The town keeps this Dutch heritage alive through local place names and the memory of early European families who shaped the area.

The town is easily accessible via Interstate 84 and the Taconic State Parkway, which run through the area and connect it to other parts of New York. Several lakes and parks, including Hillside Lake, offer opportunities for fishing and outdoor relaxation throughout the town.

Platt Rogers Spencer, a renowned penman, was born in the area and created a handwriting style that became popular throughout the United States. His connection to East Fishkill shows how the town produced local talent that gained influence across the nation.
