Aurora, village in Cayuga County, New York, United States
Aurora is a small village in Cayuga County located on the shore of Cayuga Lake in New York. The streets are quiet, the buildings carefully maintained, and the historic district spans several blocks with houses, shops, and the old Steam Grist Mill.
The original village of Chonodote was destroyed in 1779 during the Revolutionary War. After the war, the area was rebuilt and by the early 1800s became an important stop for canal boats on the Cayuga-Seneca Canal.
Aurora takes its name from the Cayuga people who once built a large village called Chonodote in this place. The streets today show how people live together here, with small shops, cafes, and historic buildings that speak to community and local traditions.
The main area is easy to explore on foot and most attractions are close to each other. The paths are flat and well maintained, which makes walking easy.
Wells College was founded in 1868 to educate women and still draws students from across the nation today. This institution shapes village life year-round with academic activity and vibrancy.
