101 Federal Street, Office skyscraper in Financial District, Boston, US.
101 Federal Street is a 31-floor office tower reaching 116 meters (380 feet), combining three crenellated shafts with limestone panels and aluminum accents. The structure integrates an adjacent 1929 building within its lower eleven levels, creating a unified composition.
The tower was completed in 1988 and integrates the adjacent structure completed in 1929, which was preserved rather than demolished. This combination reflects how Boston modernized its financial district through thoughtful urban development.
Bronze panel sculptures on the exterior depict themes of finance and transportation, while the ground-level entrance displays Art Deco details with figurative and floral bands. These decorative elements give the building a visual character that extends beyond its office function.
The building stands in the Financial District with good public transit access and several subway stations nearby. Public lobby areas and exterior spaces are accessible to pedestrians, making it easy to view the architecture from street level.
The design features three distinct vertical sections that merge seamlessly with the existing Art Deco building rather than replacing it, allowing visitors to see two different architectural eras in one location. This integration approach was unusual for major development projects of its time.
