Bangor Air Defense Sector

Bangor Air Defense Sector was a military installation based at Topsham Air Force Station that monitored and controlled airspace over northeastern New England. It used advanced computer systems to coordinate radar stations and fighter aircraft across the region.

The installation was established in 1957 to provide air defense during the Cold War across Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire. It was deactivated in 1966 as defense needs and technologies shifted.

The organization maintained a tradition of military excellence through extensive training programs and coordination with Strategic Air Command for defense readiness.

The site was located at a strategic position in central Maine and was heavily restricted from public access. Today, only limited traces of the former military complex remain visible.

The sector integrated the Semi Automatic Ground Environment Direction Center DC-05, revolutionizing air defense capabilities with computerized command systems.
