Cherry Lane Theatre, Historic theatre in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, United States.
Cherry Lane Theatre is a theatre building in Greenwich Village with two performance spaces of different sizes. The larger hall holds about 180 spectators, while the smaller studio space accommodates roughly 60 audience members.
The building was originally constructed in 1817 as an agricultural storage structure and later served as a tobacco warehouse and box factory. It was converted into a theatre in 1924 and has housed performances since then.
The house has supported new plays and emerging artists for decades through regular productions by local and international playwrights. Artists use both stages to present experimental and traditional works.
The theatre is located in Manhattan on Commerce Street and is easily reached by public transit. Visitors should check current hours and performance schedules beforehand to plan their visit efficiently.
Samuel Beckett's play Happy Days premiered here in 1961, directed by Alan Schneider. This event made the venue a significant point in the history of modern theatre.
