Plane Space, Contemporary art gallery in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, US
Plane Space was a contemporary art gallery in Greenwich Village housed in a converted 1855 firehouse with ground floor exhibition space. The venue displayed sculpture, installation, drawing, painting, photography, and video from emerging and mid-career artists.
The gallery opened in 2002 and closed in December 2008, operating for six years in Manhattan. During that time it organized over 40 exhibitions, establishing itself as an important venue in the contemporary art scene.
The space served as a meeting point where artists from different backgrounds could present their work to Manhattan audiences. Visitors encountered a mix of established and emerging voices, reflecting the diversity of the New York art scene.
The interior space was designed by architectural firm Deborah Berke & Partners to provide the best conditions for viewing artworks. The exhibition area was on the ground floor, making it straightforward to access and explore current shows.
The venue hosted a summer residency where selected artists from outside New York lived above the gallery and created installations during August. This program allowed creators to develop their work on site and connect directly with the gallery's visitors.
