The building opened in 1988 as People's Security Tower, named after its main tenant, People's Security Insurance, following two years of construction.
The second tallest structure in Downtown Durham forms part of the commercial district alongside One City Center and University Tower.
Located at coordinates 35.9983°N and -78.9021°W, the Durham Centre includes three levels of parking garage and six passenger elevators.
Initial plans included a twin residential tower called Renaissance at Durham Centre, but this space became a small green area next to the building.
