Esther Mountain, Mountain summit in Adirondacks, New York, US
Esther Mountain is a summit in the Adirondack Mountains of New York that reaches about 4,240 feet (1,290 meters) in elevation. It sits within the Wilmington Wild Forest and stands as the northernmost of the major Adirondack High Peaks.
The peak received its name after a young woman completed the first documented ascent in 1839. This early female climbing achievement made it a notable place in Adirondack history.
The mountain is named after Esther McComb, a young woman who made the first documented climb in the 1800s. Visitors find a commemorative tablet at the summit honoring this achievement.
The summit is reached by hiking trail, with the climb taking several hours and requiring moderate physical effort. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for mountain terrain that can be steep and rocky in sections.
The peak is one of only a few Adirondack High Peaks named after a woman, with no others receiving this honor until many years later. This distinction made it a particularly important place in the history of women climbing in the region.
