Whiteface Mountain

Whiteface Mountain is a summit at 4,867 feet (1,483 meters) in the Adirondacks of New York State with hiking trails and ski areas. At the top there is a stone building with terraces that offer views toward Canada and Vermont.

The road to the summit was built in the late 1920s to bring travelers into the mountains. In 1980, athletes came here for the Winter Olympics, which brought the facility international attention.

The name comes from white rock faces visible from below when clouds pass over the summit. In summer, hikers walk up to visit the observation deck, while skiers use the slopes during winter months.

Visitors can drive up the road or walk to the summit, depending on fitness level and season. At the top, weather is often cooler than in the valley, so bring warm clothing.

The route up is among the few paved mountain roads in the eastern United States that lead directly to a high summit. From there, on clear days, you can see as far as the Green Mountains.
