Emery Theatre, Performing arts center in Over-the-Rhine, Cincinnati, United States.
Emery Theatre is a performing arts venue in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio, built with two balcony levels and seating for around 2,200 people. The hall was laid out according to acoustic principles so that sound reaches every part of the room evenly.
The building opened in 1911 as part of an arts and trade institute, and from 1912 onward it served as the main home of the local symphony orchestra for about 25 years. After the orchestra moved out, the hall went through several changes of use before being restored and reopened as a performance space.
The Emery Theatre sits in Over-the-Rhine, a Cincinnati neighborhood long associated with German immigrant communities who brought a strong concert-going tradition with them. Visitors attending a show today can still sense that deep local attachment to live music and performance.
The theater is in Over-the-Rhine, a walkable neighborhood close to downtown Cincinnati, so getting there on foot or by public transport is easy. Arriving a little early before a show gives you time to look around the hall and find your seat without rushing.
Emery Theatre is one of only four concert halls in North America built after the same architectural model, a rare design approach that tied the shape of the room directly to how sound would behave inside it. This makes it part of a very small group of buildings where the room itself was treated as a musical instrument.
