Brittany Apartment Building
Brittany Apartment Building, Queen Anne apartment building in Ninth Street Historic District, Cincinnati, United States
The Brittany Apartment Building is a six-story residential structure in the Ninth Street Historic District with brick and sandstone facades. It features massive chimneys at each end, decorative cornices topped with boxed pediments, brick pilasters, and projecting bay windows that define its Queen Anne design.
Thomas Emery's Sons, a major Cincinnati real estate firm, constructed the building in 1885 during a period of intense urban development. It was built when large residential complexes were rising to meet the housing needs of the city's growing prosperous population.
The building reflects how Cincinnati's wealthier residents lived in large apartment complexes during the city's growth period. It now serves as an architectural anchor in the neighborhood's historic character.
The building sits on West 9th Street and is now divided into modern residential units. Visitors can observe the architectural details from the street, particularly the elaborate chimneys and bay windows that are clearly visible from outside.
Samuel Hannaford, a rising architect, designed the building as an opportunity to showcase his growing mastery of Queen Anne styling. It remains one of only two surviving examples from a group of four large apartment complexes built during the same period of the city's expansion.
