Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter in Chains
Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter in Chains, Catholic cathedral in downtown Cincinnati, United States.
The Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter in Chains is a limestone structure built in the Neoclassical style, rising 224 feet above street level with a single spire. Inside, Greek-inspired mosaics and Corinthian columns define the interior space.
The church opened in 1845 and was the first large church built west of the Allegheny Mountains under Bishop John Baptist Purcell's direction. Its founding marked a turning point for Catholic presence in the region.
The cathedral displays bronze doors and murals by Carl Zimmerman, with stone angels carved by Italian sculptor Odoardo Fantacchiotti flanking the main altar. These artworks shape how visitors experience the interior and reflect the artistic vision of its builders.
The cathedral offers guided tours and maintains regular worship services, with detailed information available through the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Plan your visit in advance to find the best time for exploring the space.
Pope Francis designated the cathedral as a minor basilica in 2020, recognizing its architectural and religious importance in Ohio. This honor is rarely granted and marks only the most significant churches.
