Sherith Israel Temple, Orthodox synagogue in Cincinnati, United States
Sherith Israel Temple is a synagogue building at 624 Ruth Lyons Lane featuring traditional architectural elements from the 19th century. The structure displays characteristic design of Jewish houses of worship and has been converted into residential condominiums since 2003.
The building was established in 1855 and completed in 1860, making it the oldest standing synagogue west of the Allegheny Mountains. The congregation merged with Congregation Ahabeth Achim in 1906, ending its independent operation.
The congregation formed in response to reform movements within Judaism, choosing to maintain Orthodox traditions in their worship practices. The building itself reflects the religious values and identity of Cincinnati's early Jewish community.
The building is located in an established residential neighborhood and is easy to find. Visitors should note that it is now private residential space and no longer functions as an active place of worship.
The structure ranks among the seven oldest synagogue buildings in the entire United States. Its significance lies not just in its age but in what it reveals about how early Jewish settlers reached inland cities.
