Finnish Heritage Museum, museum of Finnish culture and heritage in Ohio
The Finnish Heritage Museum is a museum in Fairport Harbor, Ohio, dedicated to displaying Finnish culture and heritage. Its collection includes textiles, kitchenware, furniture, artwork, and personal items like letters and postcards that document how Finnish families lived and maintained their traditions in America.
The building was constructed around 1922 or 1923 and first served as a police station with a small jail. Over the decades it became a fire station, served as a meeting place for town gatherings, and played different roles in the community before becoming a museum.
The museum displays Finnish traditions through everyday objects like textiles, cookware, and furniture that show how Finnish families lived in America and kept their customs alive. The collections of handmade items and personal objects reveal what mattered to Finnish communities and how they remembered their heritage.
The museum sits at the corner of High and Third Streets, just two blocks from Lake Erie and near the Finnish Monument. The building is currently being renovated but opens on Saturdays from 10 am to 3 pm throughout the year.
The collection includes a special selection of Finnish souvenirs featuring handmade objects and items from events like the 1952 Olympics. These artifacts reveal what Finnish people valued and what they chose to remember from their homeland.
