Headlands Beach State Park, State park with sandy beach in northeastern Ohio, United States.
Headlands Beach State Park is a lakefront park featuring a sandy shore about 1 mile (1.6 km) long along Lake Erie. The 120-acre area includes swimming zones, a fishing breakwall leading to a working lighthouse, picnic facilities, and ample parking.
The site was acquired by Ohio's Department of Natural Resources between 1951 and 1952, then opened to the public in 1953 as Painesville Beach State Park. The name was later changed to better reflect the headland features of the location.
The beach serves as a gathering place where swimmers and anglers share the shoreline with families enjoying the lake breeze. The nearby lighthouse adds to the area's appeal as a working waterfront landmark.
The park is most enjoyable during warmer months when swimming is possible, though fishing is available year-round. Wind can be strong along the shore, so it's wise to bring protective clothing, especially if exploring the breakwall.
The grounds support plant species typically found along the Atlantic Coast, including sea rocket, beach pea, and purple sand grass. This surprising vegetation makes it a rare example of eastern coastal habitat in an inland setting.
