Flora Stone Mather College Historic District

The Flora Stone Mather College Historic District is located on the Case Western Reserve University campus and comprises five significant buildings spread across 3.6 acres. The structures display different architectural styles and were designed by notable architects including Richard Morris Hunt and Charles F. Schweinfurth.

The district developed in the late 19th century as part of the university's expansion and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This recognition acknowledged the architectural importance of these historic buildings.

The buildings here provided dedicated spaces for women's learning, as seen in Clark Hall and Guilford House. These structures embody how the institution supported educational opportunities for female students during a time when such access was less common.

The district sits on the university campus and is best explored on foot, allowing you to move between the five buildings at your own pace. Picking up a campus map beforehand helps you understand the layout and navigate between the structures easily.

Clark Hall represents the only known architectural work by Richard Morris Hunt in Cleveland. This makes it a special example of his designs, as his work is mostly found elsewhere on the East Coast.
