Cedar Glen Apartments, Historic apartment building in University Circle, Cleveland, United States
Cedar Glen Apartments is a residential building with Georgian Revival features and brick construction in University Circle. The structure features symmetrical multi-paned windows, ornamental door surrounds, and is distinguished by a central tower with an original 1920s elevator system.
Architect Samuel H. Weis designed this residential complex in 1927 as a luxury apartment building serving as a gateway between Cleveland and Cleveland Heights. The structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994, recognizing its importance to the city's residential development during that period.
The building sits along Cedar Glen Parkway and reflects the Georgian architectural style that defined residential neighborhoods in the 1920s. Visitors can observe the symmetrical facade with brick walls and ornamental doorways that retain the character of that era.
The building sits on a natural bluff overlooking Cedar Brook ravine, making it easy to locate. Visitors should note that the structure was converted to condominiums in the 1990s, so portions are privately owned and may have limited access.
The building preserves an original elevator from the 1920s within its central tower, a rare example of elevator engineering from that era. This working system is one of the few surviving elevators of that period in the region.
