Fort Stanton, Civil War fortification in Anacostia, United States.

Located on hilltops overlooking Washington Navy Yard, Fort Stanton extends across 322 yards and features preserved masonry bastions and earthwork remnants.

Constructed in 1861 as part of Washington's defense system, Fort Stanton mounted 18 artillery pieces and maintained a garrison of 483 military personnel.

The fort area provided protection to African Americans who escaped slavery in Maryland and sought employment with the Union Army during the Civil War.

Fort Stanton Park includes interpretive signs, designated viewing points, and connects to the Fort Circle Hiker-Biker Trail through woodland landscapes.

Two masonry magazines built in 1863 cost $2,500 each, equivalent to substantial military construction expenses during the American Civil War period.
