Fort Stanton

Fort Stanton is a Civil War fortification built on hilltops overlooking Washington Navy Yard, stretching across several hundred yards. The site preserves masonry bastions and earthwork structures that show how it was designed to defend the capital.

This fort was built in 1861 as part of Washington's defense system during the Civil War. It played its role in protecting the capital alongside a network of similar fortifications that ringed the city.

Two stone ammunition magazines built in 1863 still stand at the site and show the investment made in defense structures. These sturdy storage buildings reveal how seriously the war effort was organized.
