Douglas A. Munro Coast Guard Headquarters Building, Coast Guard headquarters in Washington, DC, US
The Douglas A. Munro Coast Guard Headquarters Building is the main administrative center for the U.S. Coast Guard, located on the west campus of St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington. It contains offices, operational facilities, and security infrastructure spread across roughly 1.2 million square feet of space.
The building honors Douglas Albert Munro, the only Coast Guard member ever to receive the Medal of Honor, for his heroic actions during World War II. Congress selected his name to recognize outstanding service and sacrifice.
The building houses exhibitions and artifacts detailing Coast Guard history, including displays about marine rescue operations, navigation technology, and service member contributions.
Visitors need advance security clearance and valid identification to enter the facility. Plan for thorough screening procedures at the main entrance, which may take time.
The facility features green roofs, water recycling systems, and natural lighting that earned it LEED Gold certification for environmental performance. These sustainable features show how a major government building incorporates eco-friendly design.
