Good Counsel Complex

Good Counsel Complex is a historic district in White Plains comprising ten buildings in Spanish Colonial Revival and Renaissance Revival styles spread across 13 acres. The site contains a chapel, convent, cooking school, infirmary, heating plant, workshop, and carriage house that remain intact.

The site began with Tilford House construction in 1856 and expanded through the early 1900s as new structures were added. The complex gained recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

The Sisters of Divine Compassion shaped this place through education and social service work that visitors can still sense in the various buildings. Their presence and activities defined how the complex functioned as a community hub.

The property contains multiple buildings spread across the grounds, so plan time to walk through and view the different structures. Since it functions as a historic district, comfortable footwear helps for exploring the various areas.

The chapel, constructed in 1897, features stained glass windows made by a Tiffany apprentice. Its design takes inspiration from St. Charles Borromeo Church in Milan, creating an unexpected European connection to this New York location.
