Greater New York Councils, Boy Scouts of America council in New York City, US
Greater New York Councils is a local council of the Boy Scouts of America based on Riverside Drive in Manhattan, New York City. It runs scouting programs across all five boroughs for young people from early childhood through high school age.
The council was founded in 1915 under the name Greater New York Advisory Council and took its current name in 1936. It has grown steadily since then into one of the largest scouting councils in the country.
The council maintains three year-round camp properties where scouts participate in outdoor education, leadership development, and environmental conservation activities.
The main office on Riverside Drive in Manhattan is the best starting point for families looking for information about programs or membership. Visiting early in the school year tends to be a good time, as most programs start then.
Despite being based in one of the most densely built cities in the world, the council runs three camps that stay open year round outside the city. This gives young people from New York access to outdoor skills and nature that they would rarely encounter in daily city life.
