Hart-Montague Trail State Park, Rail trail and state park between Hart and Montague, Michigan.
Hart-Montague Trail State Park is a rail trail stretching 22 miles across western Michigan, connecting the towns of Hart and Montague through diverse landscapes. The route winds through forests, farmland, and fruit orchards while linking multiple communities together.
The route began as part of the Chicago and Michigan Lake Shore Railroad built in 1872. In 1982, William Field acquired the abandoned line and transformed it into a public walking trail.
The route passes through Hart, where an annual Asparagus Festival takes place each June with a parade and selection of an Asparagus Queen. This yearly celebration shows how central asparagus farming is to the local identity and community life in the region.
The Montague trailhead offers parking for about 70 vehicles, restrooms, and a picnic shelter for visitor use. The area is open year-round and accommodates walkers, cyclists, and winter sports enthusiasts.
A section near Clear Springs Nature Preserve offers views of Christmas tree farms and opportunities to observe local wildlife. This area tends to be quieter than other parts and provides a more natural setting for visitors.
