Hammond Pond Parkway, Historic parkway in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.
Hammond Pond Parkway is a historic road that extends 2 miles from Hobart Road to Horace James Circle, connecting Brookline, Newton, and western Boston. The paved asphalt route passes conservation areas and crosses Route 9 and railroad tracks with two significant bridges.
The road was built in 1932 and received National Register of Historic Places recognition in 2004. It originated from plans that integrated green natural landscapes with urban growth.
The road brings together natural green areas with city design following plans by Charles Eliot and Olmsted Brothers. You can see here how nature and urban development were woven together.
The northern section provides access to Hammond Pond Reservation, Webster Conservation Area, and several shopping centers along the paved road. Visitors should note that the area serves both vehicle traffic and pedestrians.
The northern section is planned to transform into a complete street with dedicated bicycle and pedestrian paths. This project aims to better serve different kinds of traffic users.
