Haystack Mountain

Haystack Mountain is a summit in western Connecticut featuring paved access roads and rocky walking trails that lead to a stone observation tower at the top. The mountain stands at roughly 1,800 feet and provides views across state borders from its peak.

The stone observation tower on the summit was built in the late 1920s and originally served as a navigation beacon for the region. This structure remains a landmark of the area's mountain landscape.

The mountain stands within the Taconic Mountains range, where Native American tribes established their settlements before European colonization arrived.

The area is walkable year-round, though the paved road usually opens to vehicles only during warmer months. Sturdy footwear is helpful since the trails can be steep and slippery, especially after wet weather.

On clear days, visitors can spot three states from the tower top: Massachusetts, Vermont, and New York spreading across the horizon. This wide view makes the summit appealing to those wanting to see the region's landscape at once.
