Haystack Mountain Tower, Stone observation tower at Haystack Mountain State Park, Connecticut.
Haystack Mountain Tower is a granite structure at Haystack Mountain State Park standing 50 feet tall with a diameter of 22 feet. Two intermediate landings connected by concrete steps lead visitors to the observation platform at the top.
Donor Ellen Battell Stoeckel gave the tower and surrounding land in 1929, leading to the establishment of Haystack Mountain State Park. Architect Ehrick K. Rossiter designed the structure as a landmark for the newly created park.
The tower displays medieval Tudor Revival architecture with randomly placed stones and deeply set mortar that visitors notice while climbing. This construction style gives the structure a raw, timeless quality that blends naturally into the surrounding hillside.
Three different hiking routes lead to the tower, with the shortest covering about 0.8 miles and gaining roughly 223 feet of elevation. Wear sturdy footwear and prepare for uneven ground, especially in wet conditions.
Eight openings in the observation platform provide clear sightlines across three states and reaching Long Island Sound. On clear days, visitors can enjoy this far-reaching view and grasp the scale of the region.
