Herman Strasburg House
Herman Strasburg House, Tudor Revival residence in Midtown Detroit, United States.
The Herman Strasburg House is a single-family residence designed in Tudor Revival style in Detroit's Midtown area. The building displays red brick on its lower level, decorative half-timbering on the upper story, and a distinctive multi-gabled roof.
Built in 1915 by architect Marcus Burrowes, the house initially served the Strasburg family as both residence and dance studio. Around 1925 it transitioned to educational use and became integrated into Wayne State University's campus functions.
The house reflects how the neighborhood changed when private homes gave way to university functions. This shift shows how educational institutions shape the character of urban areas over time.
The house sits on Cass Avenue near Wayne State University's campus and retains its original architectural details. Keep in mind it functions as a university building, so visitor access may be limited or require advance planning.
This building is one of the few remaining structures from before the university's major expansion of the area. Its conversion from a private dance studio to an academic music space tells the story of how the entire neighborhood changed.
