Prentis Building and DeRoy Auditorium Complex, Educational complex at Wayne State University, Detroit, United States.
Prentis Building and DeRoy Auditorium Complex are two connected structures featuring travertine marble facades with cast concrete panels and narrow window openings. An underground tunnel links the two buildings and allows passage between them without going outside.
The buildings were constructed between 1962 and 1964 under architect Minoru Yamasaki's direction. The project demonstrated Yamasaki's interest in integrating reflecting pools and landscaped gardens as part of the overall architectural vision.
The DeRoy Auditorium displays Gothic-inspired design elements in its interior walls and ceiling treatments. Visitors notice these details when entering the two lecture halls, particularly in the upper space with its soaring proportions.
The complex is walkable and easy to locate on the Wayne State University campus. The underground tunnel provides convenient access between buildings when outdoor weather is unfavorable.
A wide reflecting pool encircles the DeRoy Auditorium and creates a visual illusion when full. The structure appears to float above the water surface due to this design feature.
