Hollins Market, Market hall in SoWeBo, US
Hollins Market is a market hall building in Baltimore that stretches along Hollins Street between South Arlington and South Carrollton Avenues. Inside and outside the structure numerous vendor stalls sell fresh produce, meat, seafood, and prepared foods to the community.
The original market building was constructed in 1829 but collapsed during a severe windstorm in 1838 and was subsequently rebuilt with Greek Revival architectural features. Additional expansions and modifications took place throughout the following decades to accommodate growing commercial activity.
The market has long served as a gathering place where different communities come to trade goods and shop for daily necessities. Today visitors can observe vendors from various backgrounds selling their wares and hear multiple languages spoken among the shoppers and merchants.
The market is straightforward to navigate with vendors spread across interior and outdoor stalls where you can shop directly from sellers. Morning and early afternoon visits tend to offer the best selection and a more active shopping environment.
The building received a notable architectural addition in Italian style during the mid-1800s that significantly expanded its commercial capacity. This blend of Greek and Italian design elements gives the structure a distinctive appearance that sets it apart from other market halls.
