Hotel Kernan is a six-story brick and terra cotta building with a mansard roof built in 1903 in Baltimore, reflecting Renaissance Revival design. The structure, designed with a U-shaped floor plan, originally combined a luxury hotel with two attached theaters and a German-style bar in the basement.
The building was constructed in 1903 by James Lawrence Kernan, a theatrical impresario, and quickly attracted famous entertainers like Charlie Chaplin and Will Rogers. After its transformation into a nightclub in the late 1970s, the basement Marble Bar became a launching ground for punk and new wave music in Baltimore.
Hotel Kernan served as a gathering place for entertainment and social events in Baltimore for many decades. The building drew people seeking theater performances, music, and community activities, shaping the city's cultural life across different eras.
The building sits centrally on Franklin Street and is easily visible and accessible to pedestrians walking through the area. Since it no longer operates as a hotel, it mainly serves as a site to view and explore from the outside while taking in the surrounding historic neighborhood.
