Hurricane Deck Bridge, Steel bridge in Sunrise Beach, Missouri, United States.
Hurricane Deck Bridge is a steel truss bridge over the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri, carrying Missouri Route 5 across the Osage Arm of the lake. The truss sits below the road deck, giving the structure a low, open profile above the water.
The first bridge here opened in 1936, the same year it received national recognition as the finest steel span built that year. It stayed in use until 2014, when a replacement was opened after being built right alongside the old structure.
The bridge takes its name from the nearby hamlet of Hurricane Deck, a name that dates back to frontier-era Missouri. Because the support beams sit below the roadway, drivers crossing it get an open view of the water on both sides.
The bridge sits on Missouri Route 5 and can be reached from either shore of the Lake of the Ozarks without any special access requirements. The views of the water and the structure are easiest to take in from the shoreline areas on both sides.
During the 2014 construction, engineers used floating drilling platforms built specifically for the project to set the foundations in deep water. Cars kept crossing the old bridge while the new one was being assembled just a few feet away.
