Hyannis Port Historic District, Historic district in Barnstable, US.
Hyannis Port Historic District is a residential area along Nantucket Sound with buildings spanning from the late 1800s through the 1900s. The roughly 100-acre site shows how the neighborhood developed from simple beginnings into a place with spacious waterfront homes representing different architectural periods.
The area started as a modest farm village and was transformed into a summer destination after the Hyannis Land Company began development in 1871. This growth attracted wealthy families who built homes here and permanently reshaped the character of the place.
The area reflects the preferences of affluent summer visitors who settled here from the late 19th century onward. The surviving homes show how the wealthy spent their leisure time by the coast and what architectural styles they favored.
The district extends from Scudder Avenue to Ocean Avenue, with Nantucket Sound to the south and Grayton Road to the north marking the boundaries. It is best explored on foot by walking the quiet streets and observing the varied homes along the way.
A prominent family purchased their main home in the district in 1926 and created an estate compound that was later designated a National Historic Landmark. This connection brought the place national attention over many decades.
