Justin Smith Morrill Homestead, Gothic Revival mansion in Strafford, United States.

The house features steep slate roofs, decorated vergeboards, finials, crenellated parapets, and elaborate mahogany woodwork across its one-and-a-half stories structure.

Justin Smith Morrill designed and constructed this residence between 1848 and 1851, incorporating architectural principles from Andrew Jackson Downing's publications.

The property maintains original Morrill family possessions, including period furniture, linens, and kitchen implements, preserving nineteenth-century domestic life.

The Vermont State Historic Site opens from May through October, offering guided tours Thursday through Sunday between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

Morrill drafted the Land-Grant Acts of 1862 and 1890, establishing a network of public universities that now counts over 25 million graduates worldwide.

Hidden places in Vermont

Vermont contains remote locations of historical importance that often lie away from major routes. The region encompasses active and abandoned granite quarries, one-room schoolhouses dating from the 19th century, wooden covered bridges, and waterfalls flowing through forested gorges. Trails cross the Green Mountains, leading to mountain lakes, abandoned settlements, and farms that have operated for generations. Historic sites include President Calvin Coolidge's birthplace in Plymouth Notch, preserved as a museum village, and Naulakha, Rudyard Kipling's former residence in Dummerston. Several state parks provide views over the Champlain Valley and Lake Champlain. The marble exhibits in Proctor document the region's quarrying history. These locations offer insight into Vermont's industrial past, literary heritage, and rural traditions.
