Camp Billings, Historic summer camp in West Fairlee and Thetford, Vermont.
Camp Billings is a summer camp located in West Fairlee and Thetford that spans 10.8 acres on Lake Fairlee. The buildings showcase Bungalow, Craftsman, and Adirondack Rustic architectural styles from the early 1900s and sit near water and recreational facilities.
The camp was founded in 1906 through a land donation from the Billings family of Woodstock, with Archibald Hurd serving as director for five decades. During his long tenure, many of the structures still standing today were built and the camp's traditions became established.
The camp has drawn multiple generations of families since the 1920s and built a network of former attendees that spans across North America. Many visitors return as adults to bring their own children into the same community.
The camp sits on the water and visitors should be aware of different seasons that affect various activities. The best time to visit depends on interests, as water activities are ideal in summer while other programs operate year-round.
In 2006, the Vermont governor declared June 16 as Camp Billings Day to recognize the site's 100-year milestone. This recognition highlights the significant role the institution has played in the region for more than a century.
