Joppenbergh Mountain, Mountain summit in Rosendale Village, New York, US
Joppenbergh Mountain is a summit in Rosendale, New York, composed of limestone and dolomite rock formations with multiple hiking paths crossing its slopes. The trails pass beneath power lines and connect to a northeast peak point accessible from the surrounding area.
The mountain was named after an early settler of the area and underwent intensive dolomite mining operations during the late 19th century. These mining activities left permanent marks on the landscape and shaped the region's development.
During the late 1930s through early 1940s, the mountain hosted ski jumping competitions that attracted Olympic athletes to its specially designed slope.
The mountain is accessible from a parking area near Hardenburgh Lane, from where hikers can follow marked paths leading toward the summit. Information boards at the trailhead provide orientation and show the available walking routes.
On December 19, 1899, a massive cave-in destroyed mining equipment and collapsed shafts beneath the mountain. Workers happened to be away during lunch, preventing loss of life during the disaster.
